We are approaching Pastor Appreciation Month in October, and every year over the last few years, I’ve seen churches find creative ways to show appreciation for their pastor. I’ve seen some give gifts, offer a bonus, send the family on vacation, or have a potluck in his honor (as the good Lord intended).
Jokes aside, if you want to show appreciation to your pastor next month, go to church.
Not just on the day of the potluck—every Sunday, every Wednesday, every opportunity. Participate in whatever you’re going to. If you have Sunday School and you have lesson material, study it ahead of time. Participate in the worship. Sing the songs. Pray. Give during the offering.
When the service is over, stick around. Talk to the people you serve alongside. Maybe make plans to spend time together this week, like you’ve been meaning to but keep putting off. Leave better than you did when you arrived.
Oh, and bring somebody new. He’ll love that.
Here’s the most important part: do all of this for the glory of God.
Remember to thank your pastor because, if he’s a good one, he’s prayed for you this week.
He’s prayed that the congregation would participate more. He’s prayed they’ll come to Sunday School AND morning worship. He’s prayed you’ll stick around instead of acting like you’d rather be anywhere else. He’s prayed you’d invite someone; he’s prayed they’ll show up.
He’s prayed the congregation will see the blessing in giving, in singing, in taking notes, and in participating rather than simply receiving.
He’s prayed God would rid the church of entitlement and gatekeeping. He’s prayed for a spirit of unity in worship.
His sermon may not be the most mind-blowing, life-changing message you’ve ever heard, but delivering it to you meant everything to him.
So go to church.
Nothing will make your pastor feel more appreciated than seeing the church follow as he follows Christ—the Gentle Shepherd, the Great High Priest, the King of kings, and Lord of lords.
Your pastor wakes up, and the enemy is waiting.
Your appreciation encourages him and reminds him that the fight is worth it.
